Yard Sign Design Tips

A yard sign has about two seconds to deliver its message to someone driving by at 30 miles per hour. That constraint should drive every design decision you make. The most effective yard signs follow a simple formula: big text, high contrast, and one clear message. Start with your text size. The minimum readable letter height from 50 feet away is about 3 inches. From 100 feet, you need 6-inch letters. On a standard 18 by 24 inch sign, this means you have room for a headline of 4 to 6 words maximum. Do not try to fit your full business description, address, website, and phone number on a yard sign. Pick the one piece of information that matters most: your company name and phone number, or a short message and a website.
Color contrast is the single biggest factor in readability. Dark text on a light background or light text on a dark background works. The best combinations are black on yellow, black on white, white on blue, and white on red. Avoid low-contrast combinations like light blue on white or red on orange. If your brand colors do not have enough contrast for a yard sign, use a simplified version of your color palette just for signs.
Keep graphics minimal. A logo is fine if it is simple and recognizable at small sizes. Photos do not work on yard signs because they become muddy and unreadable from a distance. Use solid shapes and bold icons instead. Leave plenty of white space around your text. A sign that is packed edge to edge with content looks cluttered and is harder to read than one with generous margins.
