Design Flyers That Get Results
By Mike Bannoura
The average person sees thousands of advertisements every day. Your flyer has about 2 seconds to earn their attention before it gets ignored. The difference between a flyer that works and one that goes straight in the recycling bin comes down to five design principles: hierarchy, contrast, white space, a clear call to action, and print quality.
Visual hierarchy means guiding the reader's eye in the right order. The most important information should be the largest and highest on the page. Start with a bold headline that answers the reader's question: what is in it for me? Follow with supporting details in smaller text, and end with a clear call to action. A common mistake is making everything the same size and weight, which makes nothing stand out.
Contrast is what makes your flyer pop. Use dark text on light backgrounds or light text on dark backgrounds. Avoid low-contrast combinations like yellow text on white or gray text on beige. Your headline should be bold and large. Use color strategically to draw attention to your call to action. A bright-colored button shape with contrasting text (like white text on a red background) naturally draws the eye.
White space is not wasted space. It is what separates a professional design from an amateur one. Do not try to fill every inch of the page with information. Leave margins, leave space between sections, and let the design breathe. A flyer with three key points and plenty of white space will outperform one crammed with ten bullet points every time.
Your call to action should be specific and urgent. Instead of saying 'Contact us,' say 'Call or text (303) 595-0500 for a free estimate today.' Instead of 'Visit our website,' say 'Order online at postnetdenver.com and pick up same day.' Tell people exactly what to do and give them a reason to do it now. Including a deadline, discount code, or limited-time offer increases response rates significantly.
Finally, print quality matters more than most people realize. A flyer printed on 80-pound silk text stock with full color looks and feels professional. A flyer printed on cheap 20-pound copy paper signals that your business cuts corners. At PostNet Denver, we print flyers on #80 Silk Text double-sided with full color starting at $13.50 for 10 flyers, with same-day turnaround available.
