Large Format Printing: A Complete Guide

Published by PostNet Denver

Large format printing covers anything wider than a standard desktop printer can handle -- typically 24 inches and above. This includes banners, posters, trade show displays, wall murals, vehicle wraps, window graphics, and architectural plans. At PostNet Denver, our wide format printers can output up to 64 inches wide with virtually unlimited length, covering everything from a single poster to a 20-foot banner.

The most critical factor in large format printing is file resolution. While 300 DPI is the gold standard for small-format print, large format pieces are viewed from a distance and can be printed at lower resolutions without visible quality loss. For a poster viewed at arm's length, 150 DPI is sufficient. For a banner that will hang across a room, 100 DPI works well. For a building wrap viewed from across the street, even 50 DPI can look sharp. The key formula: the farther the viewing distance, the lower the DPI you need.

Material selection depends on where and how your piece will be used. Indoor posters and presentations print beautifully on satin or semi-gloss photo paper. Retractable banner stands use a flexible, curl-resistant polypropylene or polyester material. Outdoor banners are best printed on 13-oz or 15-oz vinyl with UV-resistant inks that withstand sun, rain, and wind. For trade shows, lightweight fabric banners are gaining popularity because they are wrinkle-resistant, machine-washable, and easy to transport.

When setting up your file, work at the final output size whenever possible. If your banner is 3 feet by 8 feet, set your canvas to 36 by 96 inches. If file size becomes unmanageable, you can work at half size (18 by 48 inches) at double the resolution. Include at least 0.5 inches of bleed on all sides, and remember to account for any grommets, pole pockets, or hems that will be added during finishing.

PostNet Denver handles every step of the large format process in-house -- from file review and color correction to printing, cutting, laminating, and finishing. Whether you need a single foam board presentation or 50 retractable banners for a conference, we can turn projects around quickly. Bring us your idea and we will recommend the right material, size, and finishing options for your budget and use case.
