How to Pack & Ship Fragile Items
By Mike Bannoura
Shipping fragile items is stressful because one mistake in packing can mean a broken product, a lost customer, and the cost of a replacement. At PostNet Denver, we pack and ship fragile items every day, from artwork and glassware to electronics and antiques. Over 20 years, we have learned exactly what works and what does not. The good news is that with the right materials and technique, virtually anything can ship safely.
The golden rule of packing fragile items is the drop test: if you dropped the box from waist height onto a hard floor, would the contents survive? If you are not confident the answer is yes, add more protection. Start with a box that is at least two inches larger than your item on all sides. This gap is essential for cushioning material. Never place a fragile item directly against the wall of a box.
For cushioning, bubble wrap is the go-to material for most items. Wrap each piece individually with at least two layers of large-bubble wrap, and secure with tape. For extremely fragile items like glass or ceramics, add a layer of packing paper directly against the surface first, then bubble wrap on top. This prevents the bubble texture from leaving marks on delicate surfaces. Fill all remaining void space with packing peanuts, crumpled paper, or air pillows so nothing shifts during transit.
Electronics require special attention. Remove batteries if possible. Wrap screens and displays with foam sheets, not bubble wrap, which can leave pressure marks on LCD panels. If you have the original box with molded foam inserts, use it. For framed artwork and mirrors, create a cardboard sandwich: place the piece between two sheets of cardboard slightly larger than the frame, then wrap the entire assembly in bubble wrap before boxing.
At PostNet Denver, we offer professional packing services for any item. We stock all packing materials including custom-cut foam, double-wall corrugated boxes, and specialty containers for artwork, wine, and electronics. We ship via UPS, FedEx, USPS, and DHL, and we can insure high-value shipments. If you have something fragile to ship, bring it to our shop at 1312 17th Street. We will pack it right and get it there safely.
